8 Recipes for Off-Scripting the Holidays

November 2019

I recently read that a memorable food writer makes people mad. Mad… really? What could anyone possibly say about food that would make people mad?

Then I thought about it. Well, there’s that… and that… but nothing could ignite more sparks (particularly this time of year) than dissing traditional holiday fare. I wouldn’t dream of it. I love that sweet potato stuff and that casserole-y thing-y. (Smirk.) I think there’s nothing strange… nothing strange at all… about suddenly finding ingredients on the grocery store shelves that look and sound like they time-traveled here from the 1950’s (“candied yams,” “sausage rolls,” and “cranberries in jelly”). Oh and the rich abundance of brown-hued foods that we douse in more brown… now, tell me that’s not appealing!

But just in case you’re inclined to agree with that horrifying person who would knock the traditional holiday feast, I prepared this roster of recipes for you. I also prepared this roster for the daredevil that might want to add one or two new dishes to their holiday spread. Or maybe you’re the fleeting nostalgic—you like Great Grandma’s old recipes ONCE a year (none of this leftovers-for-days business). Well, here you go! I’m so mad I could write you a recipe… or 8!
