Dress To Impress

August 2020

Twice this week I’ve put on a full face of make-up, swept my hair over the gray streak that’s not been “touched-up” since May, and tucked my favorite black t-shirt (that I’m convinced looks like a blouse on screen) into running tights. This look achieves two things: 1) “casually professional” up top and 2) “work-out ready” on the bottom. It’s not a look I’d take to the runway, but it works for Zoom. I caught my husband pulling-off his version of the same thing while sitting on a virtual panel last week—clean-shaven face and button-down shirt on top, athletic shorts and ankle socks on the bottom. Ay yai yai!

Anyone else feeling like they’ve completely forgotten how to dress to impress, head to toe? I honestly don’t even know where I’d find non-athleisure attire for the bottom half of my body. (Perhaps I packed those articles away with my throw pillows and knick-knacks when I turned our home into an office, classroom, gym, playground, and kids’ art studio? It’s anybody’s guess.) These days, when I hear the phrase “dress to impress,” I think of salad, not fashion. My well-dressed greens and grains are definitely earning more style points than my sad, mis-matched attire.

Hence, this month I’m sharing six of my favorite summer salad recipes with you—each one impeccably dressed! We’ve got my new Toasted Rice & Cucumber Salad with Cumin Vinaigrette and my old (but beloved) Grilled Panzanella with Orange-Walnut Pesto. If you’re into feta, give my Marinated Feta & Herb Acini Di Pepe a try—a recent fave that blends the saltiness of feta with the tanginess of citrus, dried cherries, and champagne vinegar. I also have plenty of ideas for dressing-up corn, peaches, tomatoes, and the rest of summer’s anticipated gems. Heck, I even have a recipe for dressing salad upside-down—my Grilled Corn Salad with Avocado Pesto (bottom right of images). This summer line-up will undoubtedly impress (even when your wardrobe might not 🤨).
